Powering the Circular Economy through Smarter Battery Recycling
Lithium-ion batteries are at the heart of modern technology—powering everything from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. These batteries vary widely in form and function, from tiny cells weighing just grams to huge packs weighing hundreds of kilos.
Inside each battery lies a wealth of critical raw materials—lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, aluminium, and graphite—that are essential for the clean energy transition. But when these batteries reach the end of their life, responsible recycling is essential. Improper handling can lead to fire hazards, toxic contamination, and the loss of valuable resources.
The global lithium-ion battery recycling market is expected to exceed $28 billion by 2035 (Market Research Future), reflecting its vital role in building a sustainable, circular economy.

Past Projects – See for yourself!
Take a look at some of the successful projects our Principal Consultant, Anwar Sattar, has carried out in the past

Opening up of a Scale up Laboratory
As Principal Engineer at Warwick Manufacturing Group, Dr Sattar designed and commissioned a battery recycling scale up laboratory that allowed promising research to be carried out at kilogramme scale. Lithium Recovery
Dr Sattar developed, patented and then scaled up (to 5kg batch) a lithium-first recycling process capable of recovering 95% of the lithium in black mass at a purity of 99.8% (battery grade). A downstream hydrometallurgical process was also developed

Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery Recycling Process
As Scientific Director at Recyclus Group, Dr Sattar developed and built a pilot scale process to recycle lithium thionyl chloride(LTC) batteries. LTC batteries are amongst the most volatile and toxic batteries on the market and Dr Sattar's process enabled their safe shredding to allow for the recovery of the lithium. Successful Grant Applications
Dr Sattar has been an integral part of numerous successful grant applications. He specialises in Industry-Academia partnerships. He has won a total of over £15million in grant funding, including the highly successful £8.9 million RECOVAS project which was his brainchild to develop the UK's end of life battery recycling infrastructure.
